First released by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sierra_Entertainment\" title=\"Sierra Entertainment\">Sierra Studios<\/a> on November 19, 1998, the game was also released for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PlayStation_2\" title=\"PlayStation 2\">PlayStation 2<\/a> on November 14, 2001.<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Half-Life_%28video_game%29#cite_note-release_date-1\">[2]<\/a> In <em>Half-Life<\/em>, players assume the role of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_Freeman\" title=\"Gordon Freeman\">Dr Gordon Freeman<\/a>,  a recently graduated theoretical physicist who must fight his way out  of a secret underground research facility, whose research and  experiments into teleportation technology have gone disastrously wrong.\r\n\r\nValve, set up by former <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microsoft\" title=\"Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a> employees, had difficulty finding a publisher for the game, with many believing that it was &quot;too ambitious&quot; a project. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sierra_On-Line\" title=\"Sierra On-Line\">Sierra On-Line<\/a> eventually signed the game after expressing interest in making a 3D  action game. The game had its first major public appearance at the 1997 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electronic_Entertainment_Expo\" title=\"Electronic Entertainment Expo\">Electronic Entertainment Expo<\/a>.
